Party goers celebrate by taking a favorite love or hobby of the celebrant and making it into a shared activity with friends and family. “Jamie Loves Chocolate Ice Cream”
Narrative
Jamie is an ice cream connoisseur and in particular he loves chocolate ice cream – so for his 45th birthday party he arranged for there to be ½ gallon of 12 different high-end chocolate ice creams. The party goers and Jamie taste tested each one and rated them 1 to 12. We laughed, enjoyed each-others company, as we tasted and rated each ice cream. In the end we compared the groups list to Jamie’s. What fun was had by all.
Equipment.
- Bowls
- Spoons
- Napkins
- Tea (to clear the palate)
- Sharp Pencils
- Copies of Rating Chart
- AND, of course, Ice Cream!
The Set Up
- A rating chart is created with the names of each brand and a place for flavors to be rated.
- Bowls, spoons, and napkins are readied.
- Simple unsweetened tea flavors and mugs are provided
- The Ice Cream is set up in an accessible way complete with spoons (a tablespoon will do for this purpose.)
The Play
Party goers receive a bowl, spoon, napkin, pencil and rating sheet and then “have at” the ice-cream, taking little tastes and ranking the flavors as they go. “1” is the most like and “12” the least liked. Playful spirits are welcome, discussion and debate are encouraged. Sips of tea taken between each taste to “clear the palate”. Retests to compare and rank are encouraged. Party goers have a certain period of time for the tasting. Once the tasting is done # are tallied by someone and the results are shared. Then the groups list is compared to the celebrants.
Notes
- The number of flavors does not matter: the joy and playfulness does.
- If the ice-cream will be out for a while, it is best to consider how to keep it cold.
- Encourage small “delicate” tastes, so appetites last!
- Invite someone to be the time keeper who will give 15, 5 and 1 minute warnings till the tasting is done
- Tallied results could be put up on a large chart and one by one revealed from 12th place to 1st.
